The Importance of Assessment & Evaluation

Assessment and evaluation are a crucial component of my planning as a teacher. When creating a lesson, I always think of the ways in which I want to assess and evaluate my students. Through various forms of formative and summative assessment, it permits me to evaluate the level at which my students are grasping the information. As well, I strongly believe that collaborating with other members of my teaching team is important when deciding on the different assessment and evaluation factors that will take place.

I believe that assessment should be ongoing in a was that positively encourages students to do their best. As well I believe that it should be individualized to fit the needs of each student in a way that is valuable and will provide appropriate feedback to make the necessary adjustments. Assessment that includes all of the following above is a way to ensure that students can succeed to their full potential.

I believe that when evaluating my students, it is best to do it in a way that will provide all of the necessary information that indicates where they have been successful and the areas that need improvement. I do not believe that evaluation can solely be used on its own; without ongoing assessments, it is difficult to come to a conclusion of a students understanding based on one evaluation.

Assessment and evaluation go hand-in-hand. I believe that the most effective way of understanding a students progress is by continually assessing their work and work methods which later facilitates the evaluation process.

Students should be involved in the process of assessment and evaluation. This then allows students to have a clear and concise comprehension of my expectations. Student involvement enhances their learning, in turn, creating a successful learning outcome for all.

As seen above, I intend to teach and assess my students in a way that is continuous, comprehensive all while using various forms of evaluation. Throughout the course of the year, students will take part in activities that are consistent and evolve with their growth. The goal is to gain insight as to how my students are developing as a whole. By using different tools and techniques, it will allow me to see the areas in which my students excel and the areas in which they demonstrate difficulties.
