Substitute Teaching

Being a substitute teacher is a wonderful experience as it allows you to discover new schools, network with other teachers and staff members, as well as encounter new students. However, being a substitute teacher can be difficult at times if there are no resources or information provided to you upon entering an unknown classroom. Therefore, it is important to always arrive prepared in order fulfil requirements and keep students engaged and ready to learn.

Here are some resources/activities that you will find in my substitute teacher's tool kit:

Reading
Students enjoy having stories read to them. Therefore, I believe that setting time aside in the day to read is important and will help with the classroom management. I will always bring various books with me to incorporate reading at one point during the day. As well, giving students the time to 'read to self' can also be a beneficial way of managing expected classroom behaviours

Writing
From experience, I have seen that students often have writing journals. If not, I would provide a lined sheet of paper. Having students write about a provided subject or a free write allows them to continue developing their written skills and express creativity.

Singing
I have learned that singing in cycle 1 is a huge part of students day. As a teacher, I can teach students new songs and dances. As well, students can have the opportunity to share any of their favourite songs and dances. This activity creates a positive classroom environment and allows students to express themselves vocally and through movement.

STEM Activities
Experiencing different classroom settings, I have noticed that incorporating science, technology, engineering and mathematics benefits all students regardless of their abilities. STEM activities create an inclusive and effective learning opportunity for everyone. STEM activities foster a lifelong love for learning. Students are driven by curiosity and hands-on activities. I would also add the additional component of STEAM which would include Art. Students throughly enjoy Art activities, therefore, it is a great way to engage students when substituting.
Resource, Knowledge & Inspiration
Teachers Pay Teachers is a great place to acquire resources, knowledge and inspiration to bring with you into the classroom. There are various lessons available that are interesting to bring into the classroom.
Documents attrayants, pratiques, et clé en main
Jardin de Vicky was created by a teacher who found herself frustrated when substituting. Vicky found it difficult to acquire resources for substitute teaching, therefore, created a website where individuals can subscribe to receive various documents and support materials. The subscription consists of various materials and resources that are extremely helpful when entering a classroom.

Learning magazine and digital experiences, planning tools, Lesson Plans, eBooks, ePackets
The mailbox was created by educators who were frustrated by the lack of practical, ready-to-use materials for the classroom. They created resources in their spare time which became The Mailbox; a magazine full of ideas from teachers for teachers. Many teachers have contributed to The Mailbox products.
