Tools & Strategies for the classroom
"Our task is to help children communicate with the world using all their potential, strengths, and languages, and to overcome any obstacle presented by our culture."
- Loris Malaguzzi

Having a visual timer in the classroom is vital for students as it allows them to see when an activity begins and finishes. It provides students with the feeling of comfort knowing that they can see how much time remains. The visual timer permits for smoother transitions as the students are aware that when the timer is finished, the activity is also over.

Visual Support Cards
Visual support cards are an essential way to support students with special needs. These cards provide students with the necessary prompts and cues in order to help them stay on task. It also provides students with a visual of expected vs. unexpected behaviours. Students that have difficulty expressing themselves or are non-verbal can use these cards as a form of communication.

"Coin de Repos"
Having a "coin de repos" in my classroom is a safe space where students can go and take time to themselves if they feel they are not ready to learn, if something is bothering them, or if they need to take a few minutes to prepare themselves. This quiet space gives students the opportunity to self-regulate as well as sit in a quiet zone to help themselves concentrate.

Flexible Seating

Flexible seating provides choice for students. It allows them to determine the most comfortable and affective way for them to learn. Flexible seating is beneficial as students often need to move around and change places. With the various seating, students can have a freedom to choose where they will complete the task at hand allowing them to be more focused and relaxed.
"Table Bleue"

La "Table Bleue" gives students the opportunity to work in small groups or one on one with the teacher. Through small groups or one on one teaching, it allows me to revisit lessons that students have not grasped yet. As well, students use the blue table in my classroom to complete work or tests individually as it is spacious and less overwhelming.
Assistive Technology

Assistive technology in the classroom can help support student learning. It is beneficial in helping reinforce lessons and or activities that have been completed in class. Often, it allows students to work at their own pace and track their progress. I have found that the use of technology facilitates student learning while keeping them intrigued and engaged.
Fidget/Sensory Toys

Incorporating fidget/sensory toys into my classroom has been beneficial as it allows students with various needs to be accommodated. These toys help students concentrate and remain on task knowing they have a form of "safety" by their side or in their hands.
